Evil Eye in Islam (Nazr)

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever heard about the saying "Looks can kill"? Many Muslims do not believe in evil eye, but Prophet SAWS said "The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye. If you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” Muslim, Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi . العين, translated to "Al Ayn", meaning evil eye in English. It starts when the person likes a thing, then his evil feelings affect it, by means of his repeated looking at the object of his jealousy. Simply by looking at a person with hatred, envy, or even like, you can harm him/her significantly. It can affect a person’s physical health, whether it be inexplicable illness, a seemingly common but unfortunate sickness, or even death. Yes, death. Abu Tharr reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “The Evil Eye sends a man to his grave and a camel into the cooking pot.” (Verified as hasan by al-Albani.) Entire chapters in the Quran have been revealed by Allah for our benefit and to be recited as protection from these evils (Surah Falaq, Nas).

Allah SWT Himself knows the mankind He has created is indeed weak. We often end up comparing ourselves with others, which causes evil eye by the feelings of jealousy.  It is a serious concept as evil eye can be manifested by almost making the afflicted person stumble while walking. Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) saw in her house a young girl whose face appeared yellowish. He said: “Seek ruqyah for her, because she is struck with an evil eye.” (Bukhari) It is mentioned in the Quran,

"The disbelievers would almost "cut you down with their eyes" when they hear ˹you recite˺ the Reminder, and say, “He is certainly a madman.”

Surah Al Qalam (Verse 51)

May Allah curse the disbelievers who criticized the Rehmatulil-Alameen (SAWS) and save us from Satan and evil, envy, jealousy, hatred within mankind. Ameen.

However, the evil eye can never harm unless Allah wills so. Hence, it shouldn’t be a cause of fear or terror to anyone, for supreme power and might are for Almighty Allah alone and He is the Only One we should fear. It is in Him that we should seek protection against Satan and the evil eye.  a common error for people to blame everything unpleasant in their lives on the Evil Eye. It is recommended that before rushing to attribute everything to the Evil Eye, we consider that our 5 prayers are in check. Fulfil all your fara'idh, and recite Surah Falaq & Nas, last 2 verses of Surah Baqarah, morning & evening, and recite this dua:

“Hasbi Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul-'arsh il-‘azim

(Allah is sufficient for me. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) in Him I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne).”

WHY ENVY IS HARAM

Envy is one of the major sins because the one who envies is expressing displeasure with ALLAH's authority to bestow his blessings upon his creations. Whatever you have been blessed with, say "Alhamdulillah", instead of being ungrateful, even though you may have 10$ in your bank account (still a dream for millions of people). Perhaps, Allah SWT will shower you with blessings just because of this mindset.

In Sunan Abi Dawud 4903, Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Beware of envy, for it devours good deeds just as fire devours wood or grass.”

REMEDY/CURE

It is a common error for people to blame everything unpleasant in their lives on the Evil Eye. I recommend that before rushing to attribute everything to the Evil Eye, we consider other practical and possible reasons behind what’s going on with us.

If you want to enter Paradise (Jannah) by the will of Allah SWT, protected from evil desires, and blessed in the world and hereafter, always remind yourself of this hadith. By the One in Whose Hands is my soul, none of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Apply this in real life 24/7.

First and foremost, look at our level of Islam: Are we praying five times a day, every day, at their appointed times? Do we fulfil the Fara’d of the Deen? If not, then we should be focusing on ourselves first, because it’s highly likely that those are the primary reasons for things not going right. To immediately point to the Evil Eye as the culprit is more of a cop-out than anything else.

If everything is in check, and you feel sudden sickness, pain, or evil thoughts appearing in your brain. Perform these adhkars.

A’udhu bi kalimat-illah il-tammati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqabihi, wa min sharri ‘ibadihi wa min hamazat al-shayatini wa an yahduroon
(I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His wrath and punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the evil promptings of the devils and from their presence).
And one may recite the words of Allah:
“Hasbi Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul-'arsh il-‘azim
(Allah is sufficient for me. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) in Him I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne).”
